Running Memories

So here is an example and just one of my many embarrassing running stories. It is one of my first running memories

I had a big problem when I was little. For the life of my I couldn’t sit still. My little body had to be constantly moving, much more so than normal kids.

For years, every Friday morning , we would get marched off to Mass at St. Mike’s School where I would twitch and turn and move around the pew, a continual distraction and certainly because of that, the victim of much teasing especially from the mean boys. Even when I was little, I remember wishing we were part of the Shaker Religion. I could have been their star congregate.

Even though I got straight A’s and B’s in school and was focused enough to learn the lessons, for the life of me I COULD NOT sit still.

My father gave all us kids Native American nicknames. My older brother was “Mountain Eagle Boy”. I was called “Ants in her pants”

It caused my parents such concern they actually took me to a counselor. I remember shaking in my shoes while waiting in his office. I remember him asking me to draw a picture of myself.

I drew a girl with flowers in her hair and a very colorful dress and white go go boots. He concluded I had no self esteem issues.

His prognosis, “a very normal child with an unusually high level of excess energy”. His recommendation, “ try and find the means to exhaust her before you go somewhere that she will be required to sit still”.

The remedy – every Friday and Sunday before church I had to run around the schoolyard or around our house, ten times.

My classmates and brothers and sisters still made fun of me but hey, I got to run!
